Cirkus Saga has been around for fourteen years in Malmö and make performances especially for children, but also for adults.
With humour, slapstick, poetry and lots of action we create unusual performances where we by means of absurd elements and surreal characters try to surprise the audience and awake interesting thoughts and wonderings. Deadly acrobatic tricks, juggling and fire-extingsuishing fakirs are mixed with poetry, evocative balance acts and comedy which ensure that out performances offer something for everyone.
It was Cirkus Saga toghether with LUR and Faela who started (and still run) the performance arts collective Karavan in Malmö ten years ago.
Every action that we perform affect society and those who surround us. To perform on a stage is a great responsibility and we want to manage that well. With subtle messages, ingenious devices and laughter we want to incite the audience to reflect and see that everything is not as one first would have thought and with contemporary circus as creative force we inspire to play in everyday life.
In our performances we mix contemporary circus with physical theatre and we always strive towards matching costumes and scenography to enhance the mood and create a balance with characters and story. In our performances we often try to weave tricks and circus into the action in order not to make it feel artificial. We do not want to create a feeling that we play theatre and then take a break to perform a circus action before the story continues again, instead we want a flow where the tricks feel connected to the story and the circus has another purpose than only to impress.
Cirkus Saga has performed and been artistic leaders for 16 productions (6 with Karavan, 1 with Le jazz hots and 1 with Clowns without borders). We have received cultural funding from the City of Malmö stad, Region Skåne, the Swedish Arts Coucil, Postkodstiftelsen and Clowns without borders. "Skapande skola"/Creative school and workshops
We often work towards a child audience and would like them to feel that they participate, therefore we often combine a performance with the possibility for the children to try circus afterwards. In this way we build a bridge between us on stage and the children. The audience is important for us, and we do not only want them to consume culture but also to act culture. With the starting point in each person's unique possibilities there is something for everyone to discover, we strive towards strengthening their self esteem and let them develop in their own pace. With alternative ways of learning they get a playful view towards learning something new, daring to try, fail and try again.
